Generalii statelor confederate ale Americii au fost ierarhizați pe patru niveluri.

Cel mai înalt grad a fost cel de general („general”): termenul, totuși, pe lângă faptul că este specific unui nivel de comandă (comandant de armată), este și denumirea generică pentru întreaga categorie de ofițeri generali, atât de mult încât , în utilizarea curentă, în primul caz avem tendința de a specifica General general . În paginile relative a fost folosit termenul italian „general al armatei”, care corespunde poziției ierarhice a gradului.

Pentru rangurile inferioare, corespondențele cu gradele actuale ale armatei italiene sunt după cum urmează:

General locotenent („general locotenent”) = general al corpului armatei ;
Major-General ("general major") = general al diviziunii ;
General de brigadă („general de brigadă”) = general de brigadă .

Promovarea la locotenent general și general, dacă a fost realizată pe teren sau în urma atribuirii unui comandament superior, a trebuit să fie supusă Senatului spre ratificare. Există exemple senzaționale de promoții niciodată ratificate sau chiar prezentate Senatului. În următoarele liste, generalii sunt enumerați în funcție de gradul efectiv exercitat, chiar dacă promovarea nu a fost ratificată. Sursele de referință sunt contradictorii cu privire la numărul total de generali confederați. Numărul maxim menționat este 590, dar nu a fost posibil să se urmărească mai mult de 537 de nume; întrucât unele surse numără armata provizorie și generalii de miliție de două ori mai mulți decât cei confirmați în armata confederată, numărul exact este dificil de estimat. Discrepanțele nu se referă la cele mai mari două grade.
