Cometă periodică
O cometă periodică este o cometă cu o perioadă orbitală mai mică de 200 de ani (aceste comete se mai numesc comete periodice cu perioadă scurtă de timp ), sau o cometă observată cel puțin de două ori când trece prin periheliu (de exemplu, 153P / Ikeya-Zhang care are o perioada de 366 de ani). Uneori, termenul de cometă periodică este folosit pentru a se referi la orice cometă cu periodicitate, chiar dacă este mai mare de 200 de ani.
Când este descoperită o nouă cometă, aceasta primește o denumire provizorie constând din anul descoperirii urmată de o literă majusculă care identifică cele două săptămâni ale lunii descoperirii și un număr progresiv care se referă la descoperirile acelei două săptămâni specifice ale lunii. Cometele periodice, în plus, primesc prefixul P / , cele non-periodice primesc prefixul C / . [1]
Cometele periodice după al doilea pasaj către periheliu primesc un număr progresiv urmat de numele descoperitorilor până la maximum trei în locul acronimului inițial. În unele cazuri rare, cum ar fi 2P / Encke și 27P / Crommelin , cometa poartă numele persoanei care i-a calculat orbita . Calculul orbitei unei comete periodice este destul de complicat din cauza tuturor perturbărilor planetare posibile la care poate fi supusă. Înainte de apariția computerelor, unii oameni și-au dedicat întreaga carieră acestei sarcini. În ciuda acestui fapt, nu puține comete periodice s-au pierdut, deoarece sunt influențate și de efecte non- gravitaționale , cum ar fi eliberarea de gaze și alte materiale care formează coma și coada cometei.
Uneori, cometele periodice au același nume, acesta este cazul celor 9 comete Shoemaker-Levy sau a celor 33 comete NEAT. Uniunea Astronomică Internațională le distinge fie prin prefixul numeric (vezi tabelul de mai jos), fie prin desemnarea completă.
